Using Active NZ survey data we look at participation in play, active recreation and sport for rangatahi between ages 12 and 17 in New Zealand.

This spotlight report focuses on variation by individual age between ages 12 and 17 and highlights patterns by gender. The findings draw to attention the diversity within rangatahi by age and gender in how much participation happens, how rangatahi participate, their experiences and barriers. It reinforces the need to carefully tailor programmes and initiatives to encourage time spent being active by rangatahi in New Zealand.

Results are based on data collected though the Active NZ survey between 2017 and 2019 from 5,711 rangatahi between ages 12 and 17.
