Liquor licensing – the basics

Liquor licensing – the basics

01 October 2025

Thinking of serving alcohol at your club or event? Here's what you need to know.

  • You cannot sell alcohol without a license, which you can get from your local council.
  • Many clubs and societies choose to have clubrooms where they serve alcohol. If you want your premises to have a licensed bar, we advise that you talk with a lawyer to assist with getting a full liquor license.
  • If you’re having a one-off event, you can apply for a special license.
  • Requirements are slightly different with each local authority, so contact your council to find out what you need to do.

If you require an accessible version of any content on the site please contact us and we will be happy to assist.
