Understanding the social value and contribution to wellbeing

Our recent research shows the significant social and economic value that sport and recreation provides for New Zealand.

We have been able to quantify both the direct economic benefits that our sector delivers for the New Zealand economy, and the more intangible social benefits that come from being active, such as improved social cohesion and feelings of greater individual wellbeing.

Sector organisations can use this research to advocate for the value of sport and recreation – ranging from advocacy by national organisations, such as Sport NZ, into central government, to advocacy by regional or local organisations and clubs with businesses, funders or prospective participants.
